Bert Roofing has added a new roofing consultant to our team, but Jim Phillips is not exactly new to us.
Jim has known me for about 30 years, has been a Bert Roofing customer himself, and has lived in the 75248 area of North Dallasfor the past 24 years. He and his wife raised their two children there, so when Jim talks about serving homeowners in 75248, he is talking about his own neighborhood.
That local connection is one of the reasons I think Jim is a particularly good fit for us.
A Long History With Bert Roofing
Jim’s relationship with Bert Roofing started long before he considered working here.
Over the years, we have replaced roofs on three different homes Jim has owned, as well as his brother’s home. He knew our company from the customer’s side first.
That matters to me.
Jim did not join Bert Roofing because he responded to an employment ad and learned about the company afterward. He already knew how we operated, knew the type of work we did, and had trusted us with his own properties for years.
When the opportunity came up for Jim to join Bert Roofing as a second career, there wasn’t much explaining required.
From Accounting to Home Repair to Roofing
Jim also brings an unusual background to the roofing business.
He has been a CPA since 1987 and spent approximately 30 years working as a controller and SEC reporting specialist. That is a career built around details, documentation, numbers and getting things right.
But Jim’s experience is not limited to an office.
After his accounting career, he owned and operated a home repair business for about five years. That gave him firsthand experience dealing with the kinds of problems homeowners encounter every day: repairs, maintenance, construction details and figuring out what actually needs to be fixed.
Roofing fits naturally into that background.
A roof problem is not always obvious from the ground. A missing shingle may be simple. A leak may not originate where water shows up inside the house. Wind damage can be more extensive than it initially appears. And sometimes a roof that a homeowner assumes needs to be replaced can still be repaired.
Jim’s job is to help sort that out.
Not Every Roof Needs to Be Replaced
One thing that fits well with the way we operate at Bert Roofing is Jim’s approach to the sales side of the business.
His goal is not to walk onto a property and immediately sell a roof.
It is to inspect the roof, document what he finds, explain the condition to the homeowner and then discuss the available options.
Bert Roofing does a substantial amount ofroof repair workin addition to complete roof replacements. Sometimes a replacement is clearly the right answer. Other times, a repair can extend the useful life of a roof for years.
That distinction is important, particularly in established North Dallas neighborhoods where homes can have complicated roof systems, additions, previous repairs and a wide range of roofing materials.
Jim summed up his approach pretty well:
“Because I live here, these aren’t just customers. They’re my neighbors. I want people in our community to have someone local they can call when they have a question about their roof. I’ll show them what I find, explain the options and help them make the right decision, even if that means they don’t need a new roof.”
A Roofing Consultant Who Actually Lives in 75248
We have worked throughout North Dallas for decades, but I particularly like having someone on our team who actually lives in the area he serves.
Jim knows 75248 because he has lived there for more than two decades.
He knows the neighborhoods, the housing stock and the area in a way that someone driving in from another part of the Metroplex simply does not.
For homeowners, there is also something useful about having a local contact. If a storm comes through, shingles go missing, a leak develops or something on the roof simply does not look right, Jim is already nearby.
That is not a marketing territory on a map for him. It is home.
Active in the Community
Jim has also spent years involved in organizations connected to his family and community.
He served as Advancement Chair for a local Boy Scout troop and has served on the Finance Committee for HATS, High Adventure Treks for Dads and Daughters.
Outside of work, he enjoys golf, woodworking, home improvement projects and spending time with his family.
Those interests probably tell you something about why roofing appeals to him. Jim likes understanding how things work, solving practical problems and working with homeowners.
Expanding Our North Dallas Presence
Bert Roofing has served Dallas homeowners since 1988, and North Dallas has always been an important part of our service area.
Adding Jim gives us a stronger day-to-day presence in 75248 and the surrounding North Dallas neighborhoods while keeping the same approach we have used for decades: inspect the roof carefully, explain what we see and recommend the work that actually makes sense.
For Jim, it is also a chance to represent a company he already knew from personal experience.
After trusting Bert Roofing with three of his own homes, he now gets to help his neighbors decide what to do with theirs.
