Owens Corning Duration Roof Replacement in Old Lake Highlands

Old Lake Highlands is one of the areas of East Dallas where Bert Roofing has worked for many years. This particular roof replacement was especially familiar to us because we had installed the previous roof on this same home 22 years earlier.

That is always a good sign. Roofs are not something homeowners replace often. If a customer calls the same roofing company more than two decades later, it usually means the first job held up and the relationship was handled the right way.

This home is in the 75218 area, near Peavy Road, Cayuga, Northcliff, and Lake Highlands Baptist Church. It is also close to our office, which makes this kind of project a good example of the local East Dallas roofing work Bert Roofing has done since 1988.

Roof Damage From a Tree Fall

The reason for this roof replacement was not simply age. The roof had storm-related damage after a tree fall and high winds. Tree damage can create several issues at once. There may be obvious impact damage where limbs hit the roof, but there can also be hidden problems around the decking, shingles, flashing, gutters, or roof accessories.

In this case, we worked with the homeowner and the insurance process for the tree fall damage. Insurance claims involving trees can be more complicated than a straightforward hail claim because the damage is often concentrated in certain areas, while the rest of the roof may also have age, wind damage, or collateral issues that need to be evaluated.

A 22-year-old roof has already given the homeowner a long service life. Once a roof reaches that age, shingles are usually more brittle, repairs become less dependable, and matching the existing shingles can be difficult or impossible. Replacing the roof made more sense than trying to patch isolated areas.

Replacing a Roof We Installed 22 Years Earlier

One detail that made this project stand out is that Bert Roofing had installed the prior roof 22 years earlier. That previous roof was an Elk shingle roof. Elk was later acquired by GAF, so the roofing market and product lines have changed since that original installation.

Twenty-two years is a solid lifespan for a composition shingle roof in Dallas. North Texas roofs deal with heat, UV exposure, wind, hail, tree coverage, and sudden weather swings. In older East Dallas neighborhoods like Old Lake Highlands, tree coverage can be both a benefit and a problem. Large trees help shade a home, but falling limbs and debris can shorten the life of a roof or create sudden damage.

The fact that the old roof lasted more than two decades gave the homeowner a strong return from the original installation. When it was time to replace it, we were glad to be called back.

Owens Corning Duration in Onyx Black

For the new roof, the homeowner selected Owens Corning Duration shingles in Onyx Black. Duration is one of Owens Corning’s most popular architectural shingle lines. It is a laminated shingle with a heavier, dimensional appearance than a basic 3-tab roof.

One of the main features of Owens Corning Duration is the SureNail nailing strip. This reinforced nailing area helps create a more consistent fastening zone during installation. Proper fastening matters in North Texas because roofs are exposed to strong wind events, storm fronts, and occasional severe weather.Owens Corning Class 3

Onyx Black is a bold shingle color. It gives the roof a clean, defined appearance and works well on many traditional Dallas homes. Color choice is partly visual, but it also affects the overall feel of the home. On this Old Lake Highlands project, the darker roof gave the home a sharp finished look without looking out of place for the neighborhood.

Roofing Work in Old Lake Highlands

Old Lake Highlands has a mix of older homes, additions, mature trees, and roof designs that are not always simple. Some roofs are straightforward. Others have multiple slopes, valleys, dormers, low-slope tie-ins, or areas where prior work needs to be corrected during replacement.

That is why local experience matters. A roof is not just shingles. A proper roof replacement also includes the details that protect the home over time: underlayment, flashing, drip edge, ventilation, pipe flashings, ridge components, and proper cleanup. Those details are easy to overlook, but they are often where future leaks begin.

Bert Roofing has been based in Dallas since 1988, and Old Lake Highlands is one of the neighborhoods where our local history is easy to document. We have worked on many homes in and around the 75218 area, including Lake Highlands, Casa Linda, East Dallas, and surrounding neighborhoods.

A Long-Term Roofing Relationship

This project is a good example of the kind of roofing work we value most. We installed the prior roof, the roof lasted more than two decades, and when storm and tree damage created the need for replacement, the homeowner called us again.

That kind of repeat business is not built from one advertisement or one sales pitch. It comes from doing the work properly, communicating clearly, and being around long enough to stand behind the job when the next roofing decision comes along.

For this Old Lake Highlands home, the final result was a new Owens Corning Duration roof in Onyx Black, installed after tree fall damage and supported through the insurance process. It was not just another roof replacement. It was a continuation of a relationship that started 22 years earlier.
