This roof replacement in Garland’s Firewheel neighborhood came to us through a referral from Duncan Ballantyne of Scottie Ballantyne Roofing. Duncan is a longtime friend and fellow roofing contractor who specializes primarily in slate and tile roofs, in Preston Hollow, Highland Park, University Park, and Lakewood. We’ve worked alongside his company on numerous Dallas homes over the years, with his crews handling the slate and tile and Bert Roofing frequently installing the low-slope roofing. In this case, Duncan referred a good friend who needed an asphalt composition shingle roof replacement following hail damage.

The home is located in the Firewheel area of Garland, near Firewheel Golf Park. Although it’s a single-story house, the roof is surprisingly complicated, with 26 separate roof planes, a steep 9/12 pitch, and an extensive network of hips and valleys.

A Complicated Roof with Plenty of Hips and Valleys

The roof measures approximately 4,715 square feet, with more than 300 linear feet of hips and 150 feet of valleys.Steep GAF Timberline HDZ shingle roof showing intersecting hips and valleys on a home in Firewheel, Garland, Texas.

These measurements matter because a roof with numerous changes in direction requires considerably more cutting, fitting, and attention to detail than a simple gable roof. Valleys concentrate water runoff, while hips and ridges require additional materials and labor to finish properly.

The existing roof also had multiple layers of underlayment beneath the shingles. Our inspection and the insurance documentation identified conventional roofing felt covered by synthetic underlayment. Those additional layers had to be accounted for during tear-off.

With its steep pitch and complicated geometry, this was a substantial residential roofing project despite the home’s relatively modest appearance from the street.

Installing GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles

For the replacement, we installed GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles in Weathered Wood, a color that complements the home’s brick exterior and surrounding landscape.

The roofing materials included GAF FeltBuster synthetic underlayment, GAF StormGuard ice-and-water protection, new metal drip edge, and flashing materials.

We also used GAF Z-Ridge, an enhanced-profile hip and ridge shingle. With more than 300 feet of hips, the ridge treatment is a particularly visible part of this roof. The higher-profile shingles provide additional dimension and complement the architectural shingles on the main roof areas.GAF Z-Ridge enhanced-profile hip shingles installed with Timberline HDZ Weathered Wood shingles on a roof in Firewheel, Garland, TX.

Working with the Homeowner’s Insurance Claim

This project originated with hail damage from a January 2026 storm. The homeowner’s insurance company, USAA, prepared an estimate that included replacement of the existing composition shingle roof and related components.

The estimate accounted for the roof’s steep pitch, extensive hip and ridge shingles, additional layers of old underlayment, ventilation, and other roofing accessories.Roof inspection in Firewheel, Garland, showing multiple layers of old roofing underlayment exposed along the roof edge.

Insurance estimates provide a starting point, but they still need to be reviewed against the actual construction of the roof. Measurements, existing materials, flashing details, and the specifications for the replacement system all matter.

One unusual detail in the USAA estimate was that the adjuster included removal of three layers of roofing underlayment. Finding multiple layers on an older roof isn’t uncommon, but having all three layers included in the original insurance estimate is. We typically have to submit a supplement for the additional removal, which adds paperwork and delays. It was refreshing to see this accounted for from the outset.

On a complicated roof like this one, accurate measurements are particularly important. The large number of individual roof sections means that material waste is greater than it would be on a simpler roof of comparable size.

Completed Roof Replacement in Firewheel, Garland

We completed the roof replacement in October 2026, installing GAF Timberline HDZ Weathered Wood shingles with enhanced-profile hip and ridge shingles and updated roofing accessories.

Our project photographs document the roof before replacement and after completion, including the numerous hips and valleys, roofing accessories, and finished shingle installation.

The homeowner subsequently left Bert Roofing a five-star Google review, which we certainly appreciate. Referrals from fellow contractors are especially meaningful, and it’s gratifying when a longtime professional relationship leads to a satisfied homeowner.

Bert Roofing has served Dallas and the surrounding communities since 1988. While much of our work is concentrated in East Dallas, Lake Highlands, Lakewood, the Park Cities, and Preston Hollow, we also complete residential roof replacements and repairs throughout Garland and nearby communities.

Every roof is a little different. This Firewheel project is a good example of how roof geometry, appropriate materials, and careful installation all come together in a residential roof replacement.
