Roof work does not always mean replacing an entire roof.
We recently returned to a home in Preston Hollow where we had previously installed a CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex roof. The homeowner had since expanded the property with a large covered porch and additional space connected to the garage.
The general contractor had a roofer available for the new construction. The homeowner chose to bring Bert Roofing back instead. We had installed the existing roof, and as an architect, he also wanted a CertainTeed Master Shingle Applicator working on the roofing portion of the project.
This became a good example of the type of substantial roof repair and modification work we handle in Preston Hollow and throughout Dallas.
Matching a New Roof to the Existing ClimateFlex
One advantage on this project was how closely the new CertainTeed ClimateFlex shingles matched the existing roof.
That does not always happen.
On a roof that is 10 or 12 years old, even buying the same color from the same manufacturer may not produce a perfect match. Existing shingles change from years of sun and weather. Manufacturers also make ongoing changes to colors, granules, construction, and product lines.
In this case, the match was excellent.
We were also able to continue the Class 4 impact-resistant ClimateFlex system used on the existing home. The project specifications called for CertainTeed ClimateFlex along with manufacturer-specific starter, drip edge, step flashing, and other system components.

A Low-Slope Porch Needed a Different Approach
The large new porch created the most interesting roofing condition.
Its slope was below 4:12 but remained above the 2:12 minimum slope where shingles can be installed under the proper conditions. That puts a roof in an area where we take additional waterproofing precautions.
Instead of installing ordinary synthetic underlayment across the porch, we covered the roof deck with ice and water membrane before installing the shingles.
The project estimate specified approximately 900 square feet of ice and water barrier on the house addition, while the garage addition used conventional synthetic underlayment with ice and water protection where needed.
This is an important distinction on lower-slope shingle roofs. Water moves more slowly off the roof, and wind-driven rain has more opportunity to work underneath the shingles. The secondary waterproofing layer becomes more important.
Getting the Porch-to-House Flashing Right
Where the lower porch roof tied into the existing house, the homeowner wanted an especially clean and precise finished detail.
We brought in a dedicated sheet-metal contractor to fabricate and install the headwall and counterflashing. This was not an unusually complicated flashing condition. It was simply a case where using a sheet-metal specialist produced the crisp, finished detail the project called for.
The fabricated metal work included approximately 29 feet of counterflashing and 40 feet of headwall flashing.
The roofing scope also included step flashing and other wall-intersection details. Those areas are among the places where small installation differences can determine whether a roof stays watertight over the long term.
Two Additions, One Existing Roof System
The porch and garage additions were constructed at different times, so the roofing work was also completed in stages. The final system had to make the new construction look and perform as though it belonged with the original roof.
That is different from starting with a bare deck on a complete reroof.
With addition and repair work, we have to evaluate what is already there, how the new construction connects to it, and where water will move once all the roof sections come together.
The finished project kept the same CertainTeed ClimateFlex roofing system while adding the additional waterproofing and custom flashing needed for the new construction.
