Honoring a Roof that Changed a Family’s Life
Bert Roofing Inc. is proud to have received the 2011 Community Service Golden Hammer Award from the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) for our work on the NFL Retired Players Association “2011 Holiday House” project. This award recognizes local roofing contractors who go beyond day-to-day business and give back to the community in a meaningful way. (NTRCA)
For this project, the NFL Retired Players Association partnered with the Dallas Housing Authority to build a new home for a low-income family. Our Dallas roofing team supplied and installed the entire roofing system at no cost to the charity or the homeowner. It was a chance to do what we do best—provide a high-quality roof—while helping a family start over in a safe, dry home.
This Golden Hammer marked the ninth NTRCA award for Bert Roofing and the fourth time we were honored specifically for Community Service. It has remained one of the most meaningful projects in our company’s history. (DFW Roofing)
Partnering With NFL Retired Players for the 2011 “Holiday House”
Each year, the NFL Retired Players Association’s Dallas chapter builds a “Holiday House” for a deserving family in partnership with the Dallas Housing Authority. The goal is simple: combine the resources of local businesses and former NFL players to deliver a quality home that a family could never afford on its own.
When we were invited to participate, we agreed that Bert Roofing would donate the entire roof system and labor. That included tear-off, decking prep if needed, underlayment, shingles, flashing, and ventilation—everything required to give the home a durable, code-compliant roofing system.
Our crews treated the project like any high-end residential job:
- Careful coordination with the general contractor and other trades
- Attention to ventilation, flashing, and drainage details
- Clean-up of all roofing debris to leave the site safe and ready for move-in

NFL Legends Behind the Project: Mike Connelly and John Teltschik
One of the special aspects of this job was working closely with former NFL players who stayed involved long after their playing days were over.
Mike Connelly – Dallas Cowboys Center and Ice Bowl Veteran
Our main contact on the project was Mike Connelly, long-time center for the Dallas Cowboys. Connelly played for the Cowboys from 1960 through 1967, and he started at center in the famous 1967 NFL Championship Game in Green Bay—the legendary “Ice Bowl.” (Wikipedia)
The Ice Bowl was his last official game as a Cowboy, and it remains one of the coldest and most talked-about games in NFL history. Yet years later, instead of just telling stories about that game, Connelly was still in the trenches helping organize projects like “Holiday House” so a local family could have a solid roof and a real chance at stability.
John Teltschik – Texas Longhorn and Philadelphia Eagles Punter
Another contact on the job was former punter John Teltschik (often misspelled “Telchik”). Teltschik punted for the University of Texas Longhorns and was drafted by the Chicago Bears before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent his NFL career and even led the league in punts in the late 1980s. Having former Cowboys and Eagles players on the same community-service project says a lot. These were men who could have walked away from the game and the public eye, but instead chose to invest their time and influence back into ordinary families in North Texas.
What the Golden Hammer Award Means
The NTRCA Golden Hammer Awards recognize roofing projects that stand out for craftsmanship, innovation, and community impact. In the Community Service category, judges look at how contractors use their expertise to solve problems for people who might otherwise be overlooked. (NTRCA)
For the 2011 Holiday House, the panel recognized:
- A complete, code-compliant roofing system donated at no cost to the homeowner
- Coordination with a complex team that included a non-profit, public housing authority, and retired NFL players
- The long-term benefit of a durable roof for a family with limited resources
This Community Service award joined multiple other Golden Hammer honors our company has earned over the years. Today, Bert Roofing is recognized as an 11-time NTRCA Golden Hammer Award winner, more than many competitors in the Dallas area. (DFW Roofing)

Partners Who Helped Make the Project Happen
We did not do this alone. Special thanks go to Rick McLaughlin and Wholesale Roofing Supply, who generously donated materials for the project. Their support helped stretch the project budget further and ensured that the homeowner received a high-quality roofing system that will perform for many years. (DFW Roofing)
This award also sits alongside other notable NTRCA recognition for Bert Roofing, including our 2012 and 2013 Golden Hammer Awards for outstanding residential projects. You can read more about those projects here:
